Primary and Lower School Plans

In the Primary and Lower Schools, we seek creative ways to continue our best instructional mind and heart practices for early childhood while meeting or exceeding social distancing and safety requirements and recommendations.

We capitalize on our large outdoor campus and small class sizes to honor the important instructional considerations, along with play, physical movement, and social interaction, for young children in new ways this fall.

On-Campus Instructional Planning

Homeroom Definition, Continuity, and Separation

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education
Size of Classes
  • Pre-K homerooms are capped at 10 students. The front and the back rooms of Pre-K will be used as separate, distinct classrooms, each staffed full-time by a lead teacher. The entrance to the back room will be through the outside door of that room.

  • Kindergarten homerooms are capped at 12 students. One Kindergarten classroom will be in the original Kindergarten room. The second Kindergarten classroom will be in the LS Library (which becomes a full classroom and is not accessible by any other students). Both classrooms will be staffed full-time by a lead teacher.
  • Lower School (Grades 1-3) homerooms are capped at 14 students.
Definition/Separation
  • Children will stay in their homeroom for the entirety of the day with the exception of outdoor play time. Instruction for each cohort will take place in one classroom dedicated solely to that group of students and/or in an outdoor space. Any time spent indoors or under tents, students are separated by homeroom.
  • Any time outdoors, students are separated by grade levels and will not be allowed to touch each other.
  • No use of indoor spaces by multiple homerooms.
  • Specialist classes (PE, Music, Art, Library, Spanish) will occur as one to two-week mini-courses. Each homeroom will work with a single specialist for two weeks at a time. The specialist teacher will teach students in their classroom with the homeroom teacher present or outside as weather permits .
  • Lunch can be eaten outdoors or in the classroom. If it's eaten inside, students are all seated 6' apart and do not talk while their masks are off. Windows are opened whenever possible.  Lunches are provided by FLIK or brought from home with attention to allergens.
Outdoor Play
  • The Primary and Lower School playgrounds can be used by one grade level at a time.
  • Each homeroom will have three or more recess breaks per day.
  • Students should dress for all weather—classes will cancel outdoor play only if conditions outside are dangerous.
Staffing Considerations for Cohorts
  • Each homeroom will have one lead teacher and at times one assistant.
  • Outdoor play time will be supervised by assistant teachers and additional faculty/staff.
  • Adult interaction with each homeroom will be carefully recorded to allow for accurate and comprehensive contact tracing with our school community if necessary.

Health Planning

We recognize the new health protocols and procedures may require additional emotional support for young children to process. If children exhibit any symptoms of illness, they would be supervised and cared for by an empathetic adult throughout the process.

Mask Requirements

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education
  • In order to protect our community to the largest extent possible, all students and Derby employees are required to wear a cloth face covering that covers the nose, mouth, and chin to help prevent the spread of droplet secretions to others. A two-ply mask (not the sun buff type) is required at all times when inside a building, while playing on the playground or a field, and whenever else they are or might be within 6’ of another student or adult. Mask breaks and designated break spaces will be built into class and recess time.

  • Face shields may be worn in addition to a mask, but are not a substitute for masks. We require a two-ply mask. Please use a lanyard or other attachment for your child's mask so that during mask breaks it stays around his or her neck.  Gaiters or buff-type masks are not allowed.

  • If a person forgets a mask, please contact Laurie Potter for Pre-K-Grade 3 and for Grades 4-8 to Kym Schneider so that a mask can be brought to the student or adult while maintaining social distance.

  • Designated mask break areas will be set up outside at all recess locations. Mask breaks may also happen in the classroom at the determination of the teacher, only when all students are seated at their desks spaced 6' apart and all students are silent. Adults may take mask breaks when alone in a room with the door closed or when outside more than 6' away from others.

  • We recognize that wearing a mask might be difficult for some younger children. We suggest experimenting with different types of cloth face coverings and building your child’s stamina for wearing them throughout the remainder of the summer. Talking with your child about this school expectation ahead of time will help smooth the transition.

  • Hands should be washed prior to putting on a mask, as well as after taking off a mask. Do not wear a previously worn mask—a clean mask, either disposable or washable, should be worn each day.

  • If a student or Derby employee is unable to wear a mask for medical reasons, please provide written medical documentation to the school nurse regarding the health matter prior to the opening day of school.

Classroom Sanitation Considerations

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education
Hand washing
  • Hand washing will be built into the daily schedule on a regular, frequent basis, with opportunities throughout the day any time it’s needed.
  • We will teach students how to wash their hands effectively and give them time to practice this skill.
  • Hand washing and hand sanitizing are equally effective and can be used interchangeably.
Use and cleaning of materials
  • Families will be asked to provide their child(ren) with a set of individual materials typically used with high frequency that only they will use. A list of these materials will be sent by the homeroom teacher at a later date. These materials will be kept at their individual space.
  • Any shared instructional or play materials provided by the school will be washed according to the most updated recommendations.
  • Any shared materials that cannot be washed accordingly will not be used.
Daily Classroom Cleaning
  • Classrooms will be cleaned using the latest recommendations and regulations every day after school.
Classroom Ventilation
  • Air filters for the HVAC systems will be changed out on a more frequent basis. In addition, classroom windows will be open to allow for additional fresh air (weather permitting.)

Social Distancing Measures

Whenever possible, students and faculty will be asked to practice social distancing.

Sample Physical PS/LS Classroom Set-Up

Pre-K:

  • Students will sit on individual rugs with assigned lap desks spaced 6’ apart for whole group instruction.

  • Students will rotate in assigned groups of 2-3 at assigned times through stations marked by circles on the floor spaced at least 3’ apart for small group instruction and socially-distanced indoor play.

Kindergarten — Grade 3:

  • Students will sit at desks spaced 6’ apart facing the same direction for whole group instruction.
  • Students will rotate in assigned groups of 2-3 at assigned times through stations marked by circles on the floor, spaced at least 3’ apart for small group instruction and socially-distanced indoor play.

All PS/LS Classrooms:

  • Floor markings will maintain 3-6’ of distance between children when lining up at the door or to wash hands.
  • Coats and backpacks will go into cubbies, which students can access on a staggered basis.

Movement Within Classrooms:

  • Students should remain 3-6’ apart whenever they are indoors. The physical set-up of our rooms and our carefully planned introduction into this new environment will support that standard.
  • Every attempt will be made by teachers and adults to remain 3-6’ apart from students whenever possible. However, due to the relational nature of teaching and emotional and physical needs of young children, we do expect there will be times when adults need to be less than 3-6’ away from students.

Storage of Personal Belongings

  • Coats and backpacks will go into cubbies, which students can access on a staggered basis.
  • Students will be asked to bring materials for individual use from home to store at their assigned seats. A list will be provided at a later date from homeroom teachers.

Door and Hallway Flow

  • One way paths will be marked within the building.
  • Doors will be used by as few cohorts as possible.
OutDOOR Space

Playground

  • The Primary and Lower School playgrounds can be used by one grade level at a time.
  • Students will be instructed not to touch each other on the playground. A variety of games to support this kind of play will be introduced and practiced that students may choose to participate in.

Outdoor Classrooms

  • We plan to take full advantage of our beautiful outdoor campus to provide a variety of safe outdoor classroom options, including tents and shaded areas.
  • These outdoor classrooms will be accessed on a scheduled rotation of specialist classes and homeroom classes.
  • Several shaded areas will be turned into outdoor classrooms with the use of tree stumps as seats to ensure safe distancing among students.
  • Whenever possible, homeroom teachers will be encouraged to take full advantage of outdoor space for both instructional time and frequent physical movement breaks.
Lunch & Snacks
  • Boxed lunch or hot lunches will be provided by FLIK dining services.
  • Lunch can be eaten outdoors or in the classroom. If it's eaten inside, students are all seated 6' apart and do not talk while their masks are off. Windows are opened whenever possible.
  • Individually packaged snacks will be provided by Derby to all students, eaten in the same arrangement described above.
  • Before and after eating, students will wash their hands or use hand sanitizer. Both are equally effective and can be used interchangeably.

Important Instructional Considerations

for Early Childhood

We're finding ways to continue our best instructional practices while meeting social distancing and safety recommendations.

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education
Small Group Instruction & Play

We feel we can safely address the needs of our students for small group instruction and play with specific adjustments to our PS/LS classrooms and routines. Our large classroom spaces and small cohort size means we can accommodate areas for whole group instruction with students spaced 3-6’ apart. We'll clearly mark seating arrangements for 3’ separation of smaller groups of 2-3 children for both play and small group instruction. Students would be assigned to these smaller groups and rotate together at predetermined times through the stations set up by the teacher. Younger students can sing a song or two in their classrooms with their teacher as long as they are masked and at their desks 6' apart.

Sample Daily Schedule

Physical Activity

We recognize the critical importance of physical activity throughout the school day. An additional recess break has been added to our schedule (three total). PE can be done by grade level instead of HR as long as they're outside and masked.

Shared Language and Intentional Instruction of New Routines
  • We recognize the time and attention it will take to instill these new routines, as well as inspire young children to understand the importance of following them.

  • We’ll use visuals, and practice positive reinforcement.

  • Our school counselor is developing shared positive language to be used consistently across the school for all faculty and staff with students of any age.

  • We don't expect all students can manage these new routines and expectations on the first day. We'll build in time to allow students to adjust to these new realities in a specific reopening schedule with shorter days for the first two weeks of the year.
Increased social/emotional support and instruction
  • In addition to a gradual roll-out, we recognize the need for increased emotional support during this time of transition and sensitivity to individual student needs.

  • Our school counselor will be working with teachers to incorporate emotional support lessons into our early days of Open Circle curriculum.

  • Support staff will be available to assist individual students as needed in the first weeks of school.

Calendar and Schedule Changes

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education

School life will be different this year, for both our returning and our new community members. To ensure ample opportunity for students to develop a shared understanding of and appreciation for the new health and safety protocols, as well as their new classroom spaces, teachers and grade level expectations, our first week back will be a balanced blend of academic introduction and general orientation activities. Our school counselor is developing positive language that all faculty, staff and students can use consistently across the school to help everyone internalize and respect the new routines and expectations.

Facilities Planning

In addition to increased campus-wide cleaning and sanitation procedures, the following plans for campus facilities will be in place for the PS/LS:

Derby Academy, Hingham, South Shore, Private School, Education
HVAC Adjustments
  • Air filters for the HVAC systems will be changed out on a more frequent basis. In addition, classroom windows will be open to allow for additional fresh air (weather permitting.)
Bathroom Space
  • Bathroom spaces within our building will be cleaned on a daily basis.
  • Kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms all have their own bathrooms.
  • Pre-K, Grade 2, and Grade 3 bathrooms will be designated and separated by grade-level and only one student will be allowed in at a time. Clear signage will be posted so that students and teachers can tell whether a bathroom is occupied or not.
Drop-off/Pick-up Procedures
  • The drop-off and pick-up procedure and schedule will be updated and revised to eliminate contact between adults and faculty contact with vehicles and to stagger student entrance and exit of the building. This procedure will be communicated clearly to you before the beginning of school.
  • All adults must wear a mask during drop-off and pick-up procedures any time outside the car or when a car door or window is open.
  • Family members will only be allowed out of their car to assist their child with entering or exiting their vehicle. Family members should stay in close vicinity of their cars during pick-up and drop-off times and are not allowed any other place on campus.

Building Use & Visitor Policy for PS/LS
  • The PS/LS building is open only to enrolled students, faculty, and essential staff who have health clearance (daily) to enter. Family members will not be allowed to enter the building.
  • All family communication should be directed via email or phone to Laurie Potter (PS/LS Office Manager) and/or to the receiving teacher at drop-off time. Meetings between faculty members and family members will be done remotely.
  • The nurse’s office will be moved to the Sylvester Building to allow access for all students and proper quarantining protocols.
  • Once school begins, pre-approved and scheduled visitors will complete a health screening prior to entering campus.
