NY Times Bestselling Author Nathan Hale Visits Derby

On Friday, March 10, New York Times bestselling author Nathan Hale visited our campus and gave presentations to K-2 and grades 3-6. In the K-2 presentation he focused on teaching students about creating illustrations and developing them into stories. Students were actively drawing, laughing, and participating for the entire hour-long presentation! During the grades 3-6 presentation, Mr. Hale spoke about his creative process and then told an incredible little-known tale from history that he illustrated live as he spoke. Hale described the true story of Lewis and Clark’s Core of Discovery Expedition to cross into the western portion of the U.S. after the Louisiana Purchase. His version brought to light the diversity of the group of people who made the journey along with Lewis and Clark, including an enslaved African American man named York, and a Shoshone Native American woman named Sacagawea. The audience was engaged throughout the entire presentation. During his visit, Mr. Hale also took the time to sign copies of his books for some of his biggest fans!
