Our entire sixth grade class recently completed their Future City projects, which spanned several months this fall and winter and culminated in a regional competition last weekend. Future City is a national project-based competition that hones our sixth graders’ project management and engineering design skills. Students research, plan, and build a city that exists 100 years in the future. This year's theme was “Above the Current"—design a floating city and provide two innovative examples of how your floating city works and keeps its citizens healthy and safe.
The competition took place at Wentworth Institute of Technology on January 25. Our students were judged by a panel of professionals, including civil engineers, missile engineers, architects, and many others, on aspects of their city. Some of these aspects were: infrastructure, zoning, inclusivity, innovation, and transport systems. Derby students won big, taking the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Eastern Regional Competition. The 1st place team then progressed to the New England Regional Final where they took 2nd place overall.
Congrats to all the students for all their hard work!
