Derby Community Participates in Day of Service

Derby Community Participates in Day of Service

On Friday, April 10 the Derby community came together for a Day of Service centered on the theme of Health Awareness. Through this focus, students explored ways to support children and families navigating health challenges. They reflected on how small, thoughtful actions can make a meaningful impact while also strengthening their own character.

This meaningful day was coordinated by Derby's Director of Community and Belonging, Anif McDonald.

The day’s programming featured partnerships with The Boston House: Hope and Healing for Children with Cancer and the Ronald McDonald House. Guest speakers from both organizations presented in Larson Hall to Middle and Upper School students to share powerful insights, personal stories, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Throughout the day, students collaborated with their Pals and classmates to assemble care packages and write uplifting notes, which will be delivered to guests at each organization to help spread joy and encouragement.

In addition, Derby collaborated with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization that funds impactful research, raises awareness, and supports families to help cure childhood cancer. This partnership offered students an opportunity to participate in our “Chores for a Cause” challenge and to cheer on our Upper School students during community-building kickball games honoring young heroes and survivors.

These experiences are designed not only to educate but also to empower our students—to help them understand that kindness, compassion, and service are essential components of belonging and community.
