Derby Academy is pleased to welcome a number of new faculty and staff members who are joining the school community at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Our new team members offer a multitude of experiences to share with students, parents, and colleagues, and we look forward to their involvement and continuing our mission to “Improve Both Mind and Heart.”
Elizabeth Erbafina joins Derby as a Middle School Homeroom teacher in Grade 5. She recently received her Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) from The University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and comes to us from New Canaan Country School’s apprentice program in both grades 4 and 5. During her time there, Elizabeth piloted reading and writing programs facilitated through Lucy Calkins units of study, implemented Responsive Classroom techniques, integrating academic and social-emotional components, and taught math, utilizing the Bridges mathematics program.
Sven Holch joins Derby’s Upper School as a History teacher in both Grade 6 and Grade 8 and as an advisor in Grade 6. Sven spent the last 17 years at Brookwood School where he chaired the History Department, taught US History, and served as advisor and coach. During his time as a teacher and department chair, Sven helped implement the use of C3/Inquiry Arc across all grades and divisions for planning and documenting IDM Blueprints, organized and led community service learning trips, and participated in the school’s S.E.E.D (Seeking Educational Equity & Diversity.) Sven holds his M.Ed in Curriculum & Instruction from Lesley University, where he also served as an adjunct professor and supervising practitioner.
Tina Johnson is the new Associate Director of Derby’s Summer and Auxiliary Programs. She most recently served as Co-Founder and Associate Director of Summer Arts at the Cambridge School of Weston and founded the same summer multi-arts model at the Breakwater School in Portland, Maine. Tina has also worked with the summer arts programs at the Charles River School and the Park School. This past year she completed a year-long Teacher Training Fellowship at Newton South High School. Tina has a special interest in global education and has traveled to Haiti and Tanzania to create and run volunteer arts education initiatives. Tina has a BA from Wellesley College and an MA from Emerson College.
Tanya Kotru Gode joins Derby as an assistant teacher in Kindergarten. She has previously worked with elementary-aged and ELL students in public schools in Poughkeepsie, NY, and has also worked with pre-schoolers in Paris, France. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology and French, and is interested in the intersection of developmental psychology and early education.
Emily Miller joins Derby as a Homeroom teacher in Grade 4. She has a wonderfully long history with the school, which began when she worked in the Pre-K as part of her high school project and has included subsequent roles as a full-time teacher in Pre-K and Grade 1, and a recent maternity leave substitute in Grade 2, during which time she participated in our workshops with The Teaching and Learning Alliance, implemented the Lucy Calkins curriculum for reading and writing, gained exposure to the Bridges math program and was an integral part of our implementation and execution of remote learning. Emily holds an M.Ed in Elementary Education Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University.
Patti Thompson joins the talented Lower School team as the First Grade Teaching Assistant in Ms. Molly Riordan’s class this year. Patti holds an MEd from Lesley University and earned a BA in Sociology from DePauw University. With a background in extended day and after school enrichment programs, Patti has been an active classroom volunteer and parent event organizer at the elementary and middle school levels.
Ms. Becca Manougian joined Ms. Rothman's Pre-K class as a teaching assistant this week. Becca has her B.A. in education from UMass Boston and joins us after three years as a support and lead teacher for young children at a childcare center in Hingham and the Shanahan Learning Center in Weymouth.
Derby is also welcoming two new staff members to lead our campus health office:
Carolann DeLuca-Killinger comes to Derby after recent experiences in local schools: St. Jerome’s School in Weymouth and Sacred Heart Elementary and Early Childcare Center in Kingston. Previously, she worked in the Weymouth public schools, primarily at the high school level, and for four summers was the nurse for Oceanwood Camp in Maine. She is a graduate of Northeastern University and Quincy College.
We are also welcoming Sarah Driscoll as Derby’s Nurse. Sarah is a Derby parent and mother of two Derby students. In her professional career, she has been a physician assistant in cardiology and emergency medicine at South Shore Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital. She is a Trinity College alumna and did her graduate work at Emory University.
