Academic Support

At Derby, we have intentionally built supports into each classroom at each grade level. Our teachers are able to differentiate in order to reach a diverse range of learners. Executive Functioning skills are embedded within the curriculum, Pre-K through 8. 

The Director of Student Support and School Counselors meet regularly with each grade level team to discuss curriculum and student growth.

In addition to curriculum-based assessments, Derby conducts benchmark assessments three times each year in order to monitor progress in reading, writing, and math. Through this careful collection of data, teachers can adjust their instruction.

If a student has identified learning challenges, the Director of Student Support will work with families and teachers to develop a Student Support Plan (SSP). The plan might include additional supports and differentiation within the classroom, or it may involve a student working in a small group with one of our learning specialists.

The Student Support team is comprised of six learning specialists across the Lower and Middle School divisions. They offer support both in and out of the classroom.
