Every spring, a member of the seventh grade class is chosen as the recipient of the Edward R. Foley Citizenship prize. This award is given to the student who has best exhibited the principles of respect and kindness towards others.
This June, the 2017 Foley Prize was awarded to rising Grade 8 student Dylan Arevian!
This October, Dylan presented the topic of his 2017-2018 Foley Prize initiative - supporting the native people of the Pine Ridge Reservation. Pine Ridge is an Indian Reservation, located in the Southern part of South Dakota. For decades, Pine Ridge has been struggling with housing, poverty, and infrastructure issues.
Throughout the year, Dylan will be hosting many charity events and collecting donations. One of his goals is to raise awareness about the mistreatment of Native people in Pine Ridge, and to connect with each individual child and faculty member of the Derby community to encourage them to support their own community.
Congratulations to Dylan, whose efforts throughout the year with clothing drives, penny wars, bike collections, and numerous campus events, has helped raise over $6K for the Native people of the Pine Ridge Reservation!
