Derby Academy prides itself on offering a well-balanced program. Athletics, along with academics and arts, are a vital component of daily life. Involvement allows one to "Improve both mind and heart," Derby's long-standing motto.
Students in grades 4-5 participate in the physical education program. Skills, games, and intramural competition are combined to prepare students for the interscholastic teams. Participation in athletics is required for all three seasons of all students in grades 6-8. Derby has twenty-one interscholastic teams encompassing eleven sports. In the winter Derby also offers Sports Training and Yoga/Pilates; two non-competitive alternatives.
Derby has four athletic fields along with one practice field. In January of 2000, the long awaited McKelvey Gymnasium opened. This new facility, housed in the Roy Campus Center, contains two regulation size courts which convert into four practice basketball courts, as well as the Sadler Fitness Room. Along with the Hersey Gymnasium, the facility allows most of Derby's athletic teams to compete and practice on campus. Ice Hockey, Wide World of Sports, and Sports Training use local facilities while Cross Country hosts its meets at nearby Bare Cove Park.
