The
Grade 3 Program at Derby builds on the students' ability to work both independently and cooperatively. As units progress, teachers gradually release responsibility into the students' hands, making them accountable for their own learning. This is evidenced throughout the curriculum. In our book groups, students play active roles, as they take turns leading discussions, summarizing, defining new vocabulary to name a few. In IPC, students learn about Pilgrims and the Wampanoag tribe and write their own play to demonstrate their understanding of history. Later in the year, they learn to use simple circuitry and the steps of an engineering design plan and then create their own inventions to display at our Annual Invention Convention.
