Thirty students from the Derby Academy Model UN Club participated in the Global Leadership Conference on Sunday, October 6 at Suffolk University Law School in Boston.
Eleven different schools, including Milton Academy, the Park School, Charles River School, and Belmont Day School, sent student-delegates to the conference where students represented countries and were tasked with understanding and combatting the cholera epidemic in Haiti that spread after the 2010 earthquake.
As students experienced, the topic was particularly complicated for the United Nations to debate at the time because it was UN Peacekeepers who were responsible for the outbreak; the result of dumping waste into a nearby river that was used as a water source.
Students used their best diplomatic skills to collaborate with other countries on ways to solve the crisis and find a solution to end the epidemic. Congratulations to Max and Roni, Connor and Soraya, and Nikhil and Sam, who were honored with Best Delegate Awards, the highest awards given at the conference.
