On May 28, members of the Derby Academy Upper School Student Council and the Grade 8 class assembled bags of food items as part of a service project assisting Blessings in a Backpack, a program that provides food for elementary school children who might otherwise go hungry on weekends.
Gathering in the Hersey Gym, students assembled nearly 1, 200 sets of meals for food insecure students in Brockton to take home during the last weekends of school.
In conjunction with the Grade 8 Global Citizenship Project, which tackles the issues of poverty and homelessness, the activity supported Derby students’ study of the root causes and possible solutions to hunger.
Thanks to a generous contribution by the Healey family, the bags contained two snacks, one serving of fruit, cereal, peanut butter, and one entree of either chicken, ravioli, or chicken soup.
Thank you to all the families and students who donated and participated in this meaningful service project!
