Derby Celebrates the Holidays

Derby Academy celebrated the season with its annual holiday performances on Friday, December 14. With students, faculty, and staff across divisions participating in the festive songs, dances, skits, and choruses, the sprit the school was lifted, and the magic of the holiday season was celebrated.
Primary and Lower School Presents Peace of the Season
Students in Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 3 treated guests to a production of winter classics during the Peace of the Season holiday concert in Larson Hall. Classes performed a variety of joyful stories and songs like “Deck the Halls” and “This Little Light of Mine.” Primary School students also showcased a number of musical exercises they perform in class, refining their understanding of rhythm, pitch, and echo.
­Middle School Shares Holiday Traditions
Derby Academy Middle School students shared holiday spirit from around the world during their annual Holiday Traditions concert.
Students in Grades 4­ – ­6 impressed faculty, parents, and classmates with a range of musical numbers and joyous skits that shared the diverse holiday traditions from across the globe, celebrating their differences and highlighting their similarities.
Sketches and songs shared the significance of Hanukkah, the Japanese New Year, Diwali, Christmas, Ramadan, Kwanzaa, Three Kings’ Day, and the Chinese Lunar New Year. The presentation featured the musical flairs of students and faculty, backed by the talented Middle School chorus.

Upper School Celebrates Let There Be Light
The Upper School students filled Larson Hall with holiday spirit and cheer during Let There be Light: A Celebration. This year’s performance shared the spirituality of our different traditions and celebrated our commonalities. Musical numbers like “Up on the Housetop,” “Winter Wonderland,” and “Gotta Whisper, Gotta Shout,” accompanied dances and readings from cultures and religions from around the world, uniting the entire school community in holiday spirit as we gather with family and friends this time of year. The Grinch even found himself in the holiday spirit after of a rendition of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.”
“Here in My House” preceded “Whatever Dreams You Are Dreaming,” and “Peace in Twelve Languages,” capping yet another production of wonderful performance by the Derby community.
