Faculty Member Travels to Africa on Grant

Grade 4 faculty member Ann Peterman recently returned from a two-week trip to Malawi Children's Mission, a school assisting orphaned and vulnerable children in southeast Africa.
Thanks to the support of a faculty travel grant, Ms. Peterman was able to experience first-hand the school that has served as the longtime pen pals of Derby, leading lessons, modeling classroom management structures, and encouraging English development with students and faculty at the school. She also facilitated teacher training while demonstrating the Responsive Classroom method, an approach to education that focuses on the relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning.
During her time abroad, Ms. Peterman was able to visit with the MCM students, sharing pictures and stories from their Derby pen pals, and discussing the collaboration between the schools’ joint projects.

“Everyone loved hearing how much they have in common,” Ms. Peterman said. “I honestly can't wait for school to start and for Derby to continue to deepen this partnership, strengthening the ways the Derby community connects with MCM.”
