Grade 2

The Grade 2 classrooms emphasize a level of engagement in the learning process that helps motivate students and encourage learning that extends well beyond the classroom.

Our Grade 2 students broaden their skills and knowledge base in language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign language, arts, and physical education through a differentiated curriculum. Students learn to think critically and creatively, solve problems, and engage in hands-on learning.  

Reading and writing is promoted through daily phonics instruction, independent reading, and comprehension strategies. Using the Writer's Workshop format, students are able to explore various genres and poetry. Grade 2 students are also developing their mental arithmetic skills by exploring patterns and classifications while studying deduction, reasoning, and other problem solving with math activities. Students use library and classroom technology including coding apps and Chromebooks to access databases and support classwork. Spanish lessons build upon conversational practice and expand students’ sense of vocabulary and culture. 

One of my favorite things is seeing the kids that I taught in second grade perform in the Upper School plays- it’s amazing to see their confidence grow over the years.

Art classes delve deeper into art mediums and tools as students expand their understanding of colors, shape, artists, and materials, and music classes introduce musical notation as students develop their music literacy skills and research the history of music and composers. Students learn to listen to music while identifying instruments, tempo, dynamics, and tone color.
