The Citizen Scientist

As our students step out of the classroom and venture outdoors, they develop a passion for scientific field studies and a sense of stewardship for their environment.

Our citizen scientists across divisions conduct research, analyze field data, and draw artistic inspiration from sites like Boston Harbor, Scituate’s North River, as well as Hingham’s beaches, World’s End, and the Broad Cove estuary right on our campus.

Climb aboard a pontoon boat and cruise Scituate’s North River! Grade 6 students examine the flora and fauna of both native and invasive species, all the while examining tide pools and  monitoring seasonal and annual changes in the environment during this excursion.

Aside from beautiful sunsets, Broad Cove hosts endless opportunities for students to dive into adventure and become citizen scientists, just steps from our classrooms.

Outdoor Ed, Derby Academy, Broad Cove

Classes in the Primary and Lower School collect data on salinity and tidal flow to analyze tidal patterns, as well as analyze pH and oxygen levels, and other water quality measures. Middle School classes research the phenology of the area as they observe and record natural changes and invasive species.
