Pre-K to 4 Physical Education
Nurturing Mind and Heart in Derby’s PE Program
At Derby Academy, Physical Education is much more than just movement—it's a vibrant, cross-curricular experience designed to foster physical health alongside intellectual, social, and emotional growth. We believe the gym and the fields are dynamic classrooms where students learn resilience, cooperation, and leadership.

Pre-K to Grade 3
Students engage in thematic units that reinforce classroom studies. Whether it’s the Kindergarten Astronaut Training Camp where students practice problem-solving while "defying gravity" or the Grade 1 Jump Rope Club which integrates U.S. geography by mapping a virtual journey across National Parks, every activity is a meaningful learning experience. Our third graders participate in the Health & Human Body Fair, applying their knowledge of anatomy to design and lead fitness circuits for their families.

Grade 4
In Grade 4, we begin introducing the seasonal sports offered in Grades 5-8. Students learn fundamental technique, basic positional responsibilities, and introductory team strategies, all within a safe and low-stress environment. This approach helps students develop a foundational understanding of each sport, identify their individual strengths, and make informed choices when they begin participating competitively in Grades 5-8.

Life Skills Beyond the Field
Every unit emphasizes essential life skills that extend far beyond the gym.
Through team-based activities and cooperative games, students practice effective communication, conflict resolution, and real-time problem-solving. They learn how to adapt, support their peers, and develop a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging. Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals who lead with compassion and resilience.
- Pre-K to Grade 4 students have PE three times per week
- Students engage in both indoor and outdoor activities, using our expansive campus that includes multiple playing fields and our gymnasium, which include three full courts.
