Learning Through Movement

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

Derby’s “all-in” spirit comes to life each day on our athletic fields.

Our well-balanced athletic program provides our students the opportunity to challenge themselves, discover their strengths and interests, and experience the thrill of competition.

Students in our Lower School participate in our physical education program. Through skill-building and games, students are prepared for competitive play while implementing teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance. Their experiences prepare them for the intramural (Grade 5) and interscholastic (Grades 6-8) teams they’ll join as Middle School students and develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.

Athletic Teams

Pre-K to Grade 4 Physical Education

Through our PE program, the gym and outdoor fields provide a dynamic classroom where students learn resilience, cooperation, and leadership.

Grade 5–8 Athletics

Our Athletic Program allows students to grow not only as players, but also as leaders and teammates, developing qualities that will benefit them far beyond the game.

Athletic Facilities

Our many athletic fields and court facilities provide students with the space to strengthen their skills and build confidence. Beyond competition, these facilities serve as training grounds where students learn the value of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Bare Cove Park (Off-Campus)

Our Cross Country team competes at a local park that features paved roadways and scenic woodland trails, providing the perfect landscape for our meets.

Bleakie Field

An expansive field where athletes gather to practice and compete in sports such as soccer and lacrosse.

Gleason Memorial Field

Overlooking the picturesque Broad Cove, Gleason Field provides a beautiful landscape as the backdrop for competitive sports offerings such as soccer, flag football, and baseball.

Hersey Gym

One of the oldest buildings on campus, the historic Hersey Gym serves mainly as a space for basketball practices and games.

McKelvey Gym

The beautiful McKelvey Gymnasium, housed in the Roy Campus Center, contains two regulation-size courts, which convert into four practice basketball courts.

Pilgrim Skating Arena (Off-Campus)

Our co-ed ice hockey team holds all of its practices and home games at Pilgrim Skating Arena in Hingham, a local rink that serves as the hub for our training, team development, and competitive play.

Talbot Playing Field

Nestled between the Roy Campus Center and Hersey Gym, this field serves as the primary venue for our soccer and field hockey games, as well as outdoor Physical Education classes.

The Sadler Fitness Room

The Sadler Fitness Room serves as a key athletic space for our Sports Training Team. Equipped with a variety of strength and cardio equipment, the space provides students the ability to build strength, agility, and endurance.

Spirit Teams

Middle School students are assigned a Spirit Team—the Derbies or the Toppers—to represent during the school year. Led by their Spirit Captains, students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities throughout the year to earn points for their team and build school spirit, culminating each year at Field Day.

With the points they've collected during the year, teams compete at Field Day for additional points in a series of thrilling events like the 50 Yard Hurdles, the 75 Yard Dash, Softball Throw, Sack Race, Long Jump, Distance Run, Obstacle Course, Shuttle Run, Egg & Spoon Race, all leading up the the highly anticipated Tug of War. School spirit shines and the Spirit Teams with the most points wins.

A tradition that dates back to 1953, it’s one of the highlights of the year for Middle School students.
