Derby Academy offers innovative curricular opportunities in STEM to promote hands-on learning and student interest and achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Think. Design. Create. Improve.
Our dynamic STEM team, which includes Kathleen Malone, 2017 Massachusetts STEM Teacher of the Year, provides learning experiences emphasizing critical 21st-century STEM and design education skills to students in Grades 4-8. The design work performed in Derby’s MakerSpace and learning labs has received acclaim by industry leaders, including the Boston Society of Civil Engineers, Raytheon, and The Hall at Patriot’s Place.
The cross-curricular STEM programs in Primary and Lower Schools engage our youngest explorers in the classroom and beyond. STEM exploration is found at every grade level, including activities that utilize our all-school MakerSpace facility (with 3D printers and a laser cutter) and the Healey Family Center for Innovation.
Students gain modern and relevant critical making skills and become resilient problem solvers. With an emphasis on the Engineering Design Process and the project management cycle, students work collaboratively to apply STEM concepts and utilize varied modes of communicating their solutions to real- world design challenges.
All students are exposed to and advance their application of STEM skills in the areas of:
Infrastructure and Structural Engineering
2D and 3D CAD Design and Fabrication
Circuitry and Electronics
Robotics and Programming
STEM workshops and elective offerings provide opportunities for students to pursue their STEM interests, with courses ranging from App Development, Underwater ROV, Critical Making with Microcontrollers, Web Design, and FabLab Design Creations.
Derby Academy networks with industry experts to narrow the gender gap for underrepresented women in STEM. We do this by providing girls in Grades 6-8 robust opportunities to more deeply engage their STEM pursuits by attending invitational STEM conferences hosted by MIT, Society of Women Engineers, and Nitsch Engineering, among others.
