Outdoor Learning
At Derby Academy, outdoor learning is an essential extension of the classroom, where our campus serves as a dynamic laboratory for discovery and growth.
From the hands-on environmental stewardship found in our school gardens and aeroponic towers to the "citizen science" conducted along the shores of Broad Cove, students engage in meaningful, experiential learning that fosters a deep connection to the natural world. Whether building confidence on our developmentally-designed playgrounds or strengthening community bonds through Outdoor Education trips, Derby students are encouraged to explore, inquire, and grow in the fresh air every day.
School Gardens and Greenhouse
Through planting and managing our school gardens, students become responsible caretakers, engaging in agricultural practices on a small scale while learning about responsible farming and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Together, students and faculty explore the web of interactions among crops, insects, soil conditions, and environmental factors as they develop their “green thumbs.”
Just steps away from our dining hall, perennial herbs, flowers, vegetables, garlic, sunflowers, and gourds are harvested so the school community can enjoy fresh produce throughout the year. Gardening projects are incorporated into curriculum units including science, environmental studies, nutrition, and art.
Our school gardens and greenhouse are powerful tools for experiential learning.
Aeroponics
We’re using aeroponics to grow mixed lettuces, basil, and arugula right in our classrooms. Our Tower Gardens can increase yields by as much as 30% and triple the speed of plant growth–all while using only 10% of the water and space!
Outdoor Ed Trips
Derby’s Outdoor Education trips have taken place for over a decade and are a beloved tradition early in the school year for our Upper School students. These trips are filled with activities designed to build communication skills, strengthen connections, encourage independence, boost self-confidence, and make memories. Grade 6 goes on a day trip, Grade 7 an overnight, and Grade 8 a two-night excursion.
Broad Cove
Just steps from our classrooms, Broad Cove hosts endless opportunities for students to dive into adventure and become citizen scientists—not to mention the gorgeous sunsets we're so lucky to watch on its horizon.
Classes in the Lower School collect data on salinity and tidal flow to analyze tidal patterns, as well as analyze pH levels, oxygen levels, and other water quality measures. Middle School classes research the phenology of the area as they observe and record natural changes and invasive species. Our GOALS classes and Winter Term studios also find ways to incorporate the Cove into the curriculum whenever possible. Recently, a Winter Term studio, Cracking the Code of the Cove: The Broad Cove Laboratory, operated as an immersive study where participants served as scientists and conservationists exploring the local watershed. In partnership with the Center for Student Coastal Research, the program utilized GIS technology to map trails and incorporated architectural design to envision a sustainable marshland research center.
The Importance of Play
All students Pre-K to 8 enjoy at least two recess periods per day. Derby values this time for students as much as the academic time spent in the classroom. There are various spaces on campus where students spend their recess time including three playgrounds, a basketball court, a Gaga Pit, and an expansive field.
Lower School Playground
Our Lower School Playground is open to all students in Grades 1-8. It is not uncommon to see our oldest students swinging on the swings and sliding on the slide!
Climbing Structure
Older students are drawn to the climbing structure which promotes teamwork, confidence, and physical challenge.
1784 Field
The historic 1784 field offers a wide open green where students can play soccer, football, tag, and a wide variety of other activities.
Basketball court
Our basketball court is one of the busiest spaces on campus for lively games and friendly competition.
Gaga Pit
The ever popular Gaga pit is one of our most exciting spaces for inclusive play and collaboration.
Recess Cart
The recess cart stores various items for play including balls, hula hoops, frisbees, and much more. Students love having many options to choose from for their recess time.
