Grade 5

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

In Grade 5, students begin an exciting new chapter as they step into their roles as the newest members of our Middle School community.

In this supportive, relational environment, students build the essential self-advocacy, organization, and study skills that empower them to become independent and collaborative learners.

Our curriculum encourages students to gain a global perspective and view the world through an inclusive lens, culminating in the signature International Studies Look and Learn showcase. While we introduce greater academic challenges—including revitalized STEM offerings and a bolstered sports program—we remain committed to the "Derby Difference." This means nurturing the whole child through a balance of rigorous inquiry and the joy of being young, ensuring every student has at least two recesses a day and feels truly known, trusted, and celebrated.

Hear from our students about the Grade 5 International Studies Capstone project!

Capstone Project

The Grade 5 International/Indigenous Peoples Capstone Project is one of the highlights of the year in fifth grade. Students step into the role of social scientists to investigate global issues, craft research-based informational essays, deliver engaging news reports, and design innovative solutions aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Students engage in months of interdisciplinary research into countries from the western hemisphere and the global challenges they face. The project culminates in the Look and Learn Celebration where students showcase their findings and answer questions from peers and adults.
