Grade 5

Our Grade 5 science students use a hands-on approach to understanding science concepts such as astronomy, simple machines, and ecology, while using the scientific method and conducting research projects and presentations, laboratory investigations, dissection, and exciting estuary field work. Spanish classes advance their vocabulary and grammatical structures as they formulate more complex sentences, write paragraphs, and begin to explore Spanish literature.

Students explore the Spanish language and culture, as well as develop a deeper understanding of grammar and pronunciation through conversation as they formulate questions and appropriate responses.

Grade 5 English is anchored through a year of immersive novel studies and hands-on writing workshops designed to nurture students’ minds and hearts. Students explore full-length novels across genres and engage in thoughtful, text-based discussions. Each novel serves as a mentor text, which allows students to study how authors craft characters, create vivid settings, and develop themes. Students apply close reading strategies such as annotating, inferring, and tracking character change to deepen comprehension. In both whole-class and small-group discussions, they cite textual evidence, make connections between ideas, and analyze how authors’ choices shape meaning. These practices strengthen critical thinking and build a strong foundation for evidence-based interpretation.

Writing instruction follows a workshop model that emphasizes process, independence, and craft. The year begins with narrative writing as students study small-moment storytelling to understand how authors develop dialogue, pacing, sensory detail, and internal thinking. They then apply these techniques to realistic fiction by creating complex characters, meaningful conflicts, and carefully constructed settings. Next, students shift focus to writing about reading. They respond analytically to texts and use evidence to support interpretations, track themes, and examine author’s craft. This foundation leads into informational writing and research skills. Students plan and organize information effectively and integrate credible sources. Later in the year, students focus on persuasive writing. They craft clear thesis statements, develop well-reasoned supporting claims, and use textual evidence to strengthen their positions. Across all genres, students move intentionally through each stage of the writing process. They brainstorm, draft, revise, edit, participate in peer conferences, and publish their work. Vocabulary development is strengthened through direct instruction with Wordly Wise as students build academic language through structured practice, application activities, and cumulative review.
