The Grade 4 Program at Derby emphasizes self-reliance and underscores the importance of teamwork. Students participate in project-based learning units and activities that illustrate that cooperation is as important as competition. Grade 4 teachers foster a supportive transition between Lower and Middle School, and maintain a yearlong theme of courage and bravery. In Grade 4, varied and ample opportunities in the arts, sports, extracurricular activities, and community service enhance a more challenging academic curriculum, and set the stage for further social and emotional growth. Fourth grade is the first year that students take a leadership role in the school community, mentoring primary school students as part of the PALS program, and electing grade representatives to the Middle School Student Council.
