Grade 2
In Grade 2, children bring an unstoppable sense of curiosity and a growing determination to figure out how the world works.
These bright, inventive minds are constantly asking why and how—and our role is to meet them right there, turning their natural wonder into meaningful, hands-on learning. Every day, students are encouraged to investigate big questions, test new ideas, and take joy in the process of discovery.

Academics

Literacy
Grade 2 levels up literacy by pairing advanced phonics with a deep dive into chapter books and series book clubs. Students sharpen their narrative voices through diverse projects, ranging from technical "How-To" guides to expressive poetry. A major highlight is the "Derby Weekly," a collaborative newspaper with Grade 3 that transforms students into active reporters. This well-rounded approach ensures every student emerges as a versatile, confident communicator ready for more complex challenges.

Math
Grade 2 math focuses on hands-on exploration within our workshop model. Students utilize a variety of visual tools and strategies to solve problems and improve their mathematical reasoning. By blending conceptual learning with practical application, students develop a well-rounded mathematical foundation.

Specials
Grade 2 students begin a biweekly study of the practice of yoga, adding to our mindfulness and social/emotional learning curriculum. They also participate in vibrant art, music, physical education, library, and Spanish classes each week—each of these subjects frequently complements and integrates into the classroom curriculum.
Projects Curriculum
Second graders engage in a vibrant projects curriculum that blends inquiry, creativity, arts, and real-world connections. Through each project, students are not only gathering facts—they’re building models, designing solutions, creating art, and sharing their discoveries with others. Learning is active, student-driven, and full of opportunities to invent. Each unit culminates in a learning celebration with families.
