Grade 2
Where Curiosity Becomes Discovery
In Grade 2, children bring an unstoppable sense of curiosity and a growing determination to figure out how the world works. These bright, inventive minds are constantly asking why and how — and our role is to meet them right there, turning their natural wonder into meaningful, hands-on learning. Every day, students are encouraged to investigate big questions, test new ideas, and take joy in the process of discovery.
Our workshop model for reading, writing, and mathematics ensures that each child gets exactly what they need to grow. Most instructional time happens in small groups, where classroom teachers, instructional assistants, and learning specialists work side by side with students — differentiating instruction, building skills, and nurturing confidence. Whether a child is crafting a persuasive paragraph, exploring fractions, or discussing the theme of a story, they are active participants in their own learning journey.
Grade 2 students also begin a biweekly study of the practice of yoga, adding to our mindfulness and social/emotional learning curriculum. They also participate in vibrant art, music, physical education, library, and Spanish classes each week—each of these subjects frequently complements and integrates into the classroom curriculum.
Most importantly, Grade 2 at Derby is a place where children’s curiosity is celebrated as the spark that ignites all learning. They leave each day with new skills, new ideas, and the confidence to keep asking the big questions.

Grade 2 Projects — Learning Through Exploration
Second graders engage in a vibrant projects curriculum that blends inquiry, creativity, arts, and real-world connections:
-
All About Me: A deep dive into identity, family heritage, and even the science of the brain, helping students understand themselves and the communities they belong to.
- STEM—Rise, Sink, Fall: A hands-on engineering and science challenge where students experiment, design, and test to discover the forces behind motion and buoyancy.
- Chocolate: A cross-curricular adventure tracing chocolate from bean to bar, exploring geography, history, culture, and even a little taste testing!
- Water/Malawi: Inspired by our global connection with Malawi, students investigate the importance of water in communities near and far, blending geography, environmental science, and civic empathy.
- History of Derby: Students become historians, uncovering the stories and traditions that make our school unique.
Through each project, students are not only gathering facts — they’re building models, designing solutions, creating art, and sharing their discoveries with others. Learning is active, student-driven, and full of opportunities to invent.
One of my favorite things is seeing the kids that I taught in second grade perform in the Upper School plays- it’s amazing to see their confidence grow over the years.
