Lower School | Pre-K–Grade 4

Where Curiosity and Creativity Lead the Way

In Derby Academy’s Lower School (Grades Pre-K to 4), we embrace the lively minds and imaginative spirits of 4 through 9 year olds. Children at these ages are eager to explore, inventive in their thinking, and motivated by a strong desire to understand how things work. Our classrooms harness this natural drive by creating experiences that spark curiosity, encourage creativity, and challenge students to make meaningful connections across subjects.

At Derby, the Lower School years are a time of discovery, creativity, and connection—where curiosity is celebrated, talents are nurtured, and students are equipped with the skills and mindset to thrive both in the classroom and beyond.

Yoga at Derby

Calm Minds, Ready Learners

When our teachers' passions are supported, our students' curiosity is encouraged, and the two are combined...that's what the Derby difference is all about.

Grade 2 teacher Betsy Alvord has turned her passion for yoga into a meaningful program for our students. Partnering with School Counselor Julie Browne and the School, she developed a yoga program that brings calm, focus, and balance into our students lives. We are so excited to see this program continue to grow in the coming years!
