Our Mission
Founded in 1784, Derby Academy is a Pre-K to Grade 8 independent school committed to providing students with a balance of challenging academics with flexibility and a safe space for organic learning and innovation. Our mission is to inspire and foster a foundation for lifelong learning through a focus on improving both mind and heart.

We believe in fostering the confidence to speak up, speak out, and take risks. At Derby, kids stay young longer, are encouraged to seek out wonder, and are taught how to think rather than what to think.

By the end of their time on Broad Cove, our graduates are mature, articulate, and ready to lead, equipped with a strong moral compass and the ability to stand up for others and their own beliefs. This commitment culminates in our Portrait of a Graduate, which outlines the five essential skills and values cultivated across all grade levels.

They adapt easily to new situations, staying calm and focused under pressure. Persistent and tenacious, they refuse to give up until they find a satisfactory resolution. Even in setbacks, they remain optimistic and goal-oriented, making them valuable assets who overcome challenges with grace and determination.

Critical thinking and confidence are nurtured at every grade level, culminating in projects like the Future City Competition in sixth grade and the eighth grade speeches.
