Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

At Derby, we believe that a diverse and inclusive community is an essential and fundamental piece of educational excellence.

Our goal is to prepare empathetic citizens who are ready to engage in an increasingly interdependent world. We emphasize listening, reflecting, and perspective taking to build cultural competence. We welcome, value, and honor the authentic, individual selves of each and every community member.

DEIB in Action at Derby

Making a Derby education accessible is a priority.

We are eager to continue expanding our reach into areas that are underrepresented within our community. To make Derby more accessible, we offer multiple bus routes that service towns as far north as Dorchester and as far south as Duxbury. While many of our families reside in Hingham, we also welcome students from all over the South Shore and into Boston.

Making Derby financially accessible is also an area of focus. We have doubled our tuition assistance budget over the past five years and we continue to grow that initiative each year.

Partnership with MCM

Children and a teacher sit on the floor clapping as a video plays on a large screen in a classroom, with a model of a wind turbine in the foreground.

7,600 miles from Hingham, the children and faculty at Malawi Children’s Mission Academy in Malawi, Africa inspire our community in countless ways.

Through a multi-year, student-to-student partnership with MCM that starts in the Lower School and continues through graduation, students develop sustained, authentic global relationships through our Pen Pals program, yearly Global Read Aloud events, and curricular collaborations that culminate with FaceTime calls to connect our cultures, share stories, and learn together.

Through travel grants, Derby faculty members have visited the MCM campus to share and learn curriculum development and teaching strategies, and have even exchanged sunflower seeds to plant in each other's gardens, returning to Derby with new perspectives and a stronger global connection.
