| | Lower School Support Services: Kindergarten – Grade 3
As part of the reading model, the Lower School reading specialist works with small groups of first and second graders using an Orton-Gillingham approach during the block of time allotted for language arts. Orton-Gillingham is a systematic, structured and multi-sensory program. In addition, the reading specialist works with individuals and small groups on an as-needed basis to provide supplemental support in areas such as phonemic awareness, sound-symbol association, decoding, fluency, comprehension and spelling.
Arrangements are made by the school at the recommendation of the reading specialist, Lower School Division Head or homeroom teacher. Children in Kindergarten to Grade 3 are seen during the school day.
Middle and Upper Schools Support Services: Grades 4–8
Derby Academy faculty and staff provide the following services for students who need extra support for their academic work:
• Extra-help sessions are provided by the faculty on a regular basis for all students on an as-needed basis.
• Organizational, time management, test-taking and study skills support is provided by our on-staff tutors. These sessions normally occur once or twice per week in one-on-one or small-group settings.
• Academic tutoring is provided by our on-staff tutors who assist classroom teachers by working through assignments that pertain to any given discipline. English, reading and math courses tend to utilize this service most frequently. These sessions normally occur once or twice per week in one-on-one or small-group settings.
• Support is provided on a one-on-one basis by our on-staff specialists when a mild learning disability is identified through outside evaluation. For most children this requires between one and three sessions per week.
Arrangements for academic support are made by the school at the request of the individual parents or at the recommendation of the Coordinator of Support Services or the Division Head. There is an additional fee and space is limited. Students in Grades 4 – 8 are seen during their study hall periods.
