Five Finger Test
How do you choose the perfect book to read--one that’s not too easy, but not too hard? Sometimes it’s hard to tell if the reading level is right for you just from looking at the book. Use this simple Five Finger Test to decide.
- Open your book to any page that has lots of writing and not many pictures.
- Read the page aloud or in a whisper so that you can hear when you have difficulty.
- Put one finger up each time you find a word you don’t know.
- If you have five fingers up, the book is too hard and won’t be fun to read. Save it for later in the year and choose another book.
- If you have no fingers up, the book may be too easy. If you have two to three fingers up, the book should be perfect for you. Have fun reading!
