Dear Derby families, faculty and friends,
I am honored this year to be the recipient of the Edward R. Foley Citizenship Prize. This award is given to an eighth grader to manage a school wide community service project – run primarily by the eighth grade class. This prize comes with the task of determining the benefactor of the fundraising as well as implementing fundraising programs throughout the year.
As a school, we are very fortunate to be so close to the medical community in Boston. Many students in our school have used the incredible services available at Children’s Hospital Boston. It was important to me that the cause for this year’s Foley prize project benefits children, so I have decided to raise money for the hospital’s Children’s Activity Fund. This fund allows sick children an opportunity to be kids while they are hospitalized. It pays for books, crafts, entertainment, clowns, games and birthday cakes. This fund helps a child forget they are a patient! Imagine being hospitalized without books, entertainment or activities.
For the three weeks between Thanksgiving Break and December Break there will be two Holiday trees erected on campus – one by the Lower School and one by the Upper School Science Building. We will be selling ornaments for these trees, which will be a symbol of the school’s fundraising for this great cause. Please consider purchasing an ornament. They will be handmade by a Derby eighth grader and are terrific gifts for a teacher, a friend, a family member or in honor of a Children’s Hospital Patient.
The suggested cost for the ornaments is $15 but any amount is greatly appreciated. Checks can be payable to the Children’s Hospital Trust. An order form is included, as well as a brochure description with more details on this project.
Thank you for your support of Children’s Hospital, the Foley project and the eighth grade class.
Thank you,
Regan O’Donnell |
