Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 3
Since Pre-Kindergarten is the first class at Derby, we enroll more new students in that grade than in any other grade in the school. We modestly increase the size of each class in the Lower School and expect to have openings in each grade each year.
Filing an Application
As part of the admission process, prospective families should complete an application. We do accept applications throughout the year and act on them depending on availability of places. Other information and forms will be sent to you as part of the application procedure.
Evaluating ApplicantsWe evaluate applicants through parent interviews, candidate visits to current grade levels, school reports, teacher evaluations and age-appropriate tasks while visiting Derby. For the younger children our evaluations are based on everyday tasks such as problem solving, language skills, ability to focus, motor skills and socialization to determine readiness to join a particular class. For older students we look for demonstrated academic ability, motivation and social responsibility.
