Message from the Head of School Andrea Archer

Dear Derby Families,

The sun has returned to brighten our spirits this week and we have been reminded of how pleasurable it is to watch fall sports as the leaves gradually turn color throughout the season. These fall colors warn us that Halloween and the end of Daylight Savings time will soon be upon us. The Parent Association is helping us celebrate Halloween this year with a party which will include a movie and trick or treating on Saturday, October 31. We will, therefore, not hold a Halloween Parade next Friday at school. As the clocks change and darkness falls soon after dismissal, I urge you to remind your children that they should not be on campus without supervision. If you are running late for pick up, your children should go to the music lesson study hall which is held in the Lewis Dining Room from 4:00 pm and you should pick them up from there.

Message from the Head of Middle and Upper Schools John Houghton

Dear Middle and Upper School Families,

Author Todd Strasser’s visit this week was extremely well received on our campus. After spending time with a small group of Middle Schoolers in a workshop setting, Mr. Strasser spoke to students in Larson Hall about the rewards and challenges of being a writer. An articulate individual with a wonderful sense of humor and many funny stories to share about the world of publishing, Derby students were treated to a close-up view of one of America’s more successful children’s authors.

Message from the Head of Lower School Benita Griffin

Dear Lower School Parents,

What does cooperation look like in the Lower School

  • A student grabs his box of crayons and suddenly all 16 crayons are scattered on the floor. Before the child can retrieve his crayons, four other friends are on the floor helping to gather them!  First graders never hesitate to perform acts of kindness for each other!” writes Mrs. Mancuso.
